Lights Plays Portland

I ventured out tonight to the Hawthorne Theatre my first concert since I moved to PDX. I defiantly needed a night off to just go get lost in the music. Interestingly enough, I first heard of a little band (no so little anymore) called Lights when I was surfing through the “other/indie” music categories on MySpace, which I do from time to time if I am looking for something new, unusual, rising or random.

The opening band for lights was Stars of Track & Field, they were pretty good. I liked their stuff but did not have a chance to pick up their album, I guess the chick @ the merch table was back stage or something when I swung by between a few Widmers & Hawthorne ales.

I liked the Venue a lot, it was very chill & low key. The price of the tickets were really reasonable & a nice change from the frequently prohibitive price gouging that used to happen back in DC.  The Portlanders were nice, amiable & it was a diverse mix of people.  The club was split into a over 21 (in the back) / all ages up front.  It was a layout I had never seen before, what can I say the joint was interesting overall.

I think of all the photos I took Lights III (above is my abso-fav). Lights was a good live show, even if it was their second time coming back through pdx they still rocked it. The band has been touring for the last year & a half, so lights confessed that she was pretty tired but still hyped up to be back in Portland. Guess this was the second to last tour date before getting back home to Toronto.

Lights played everything I wanted to hear plus they covered two great Phil Collins songs, which clearly she loved. Halfway through the show, in between songs a teen / fan from MySpace gave Lights a block of cheese. Of course, she was gracious & accepted the legendary cracker topping with a smile. Apparently there was some kind of social network cheese meme bouncing around the web the past couple months…tasty!!! :)

Oh yeah I almost forgot the drummer for Lights rocked!!! Honestly I was expecting a drum machine, but was delightfully surprised by an *ANIMAL* beast wailer.

Lights & Todd

When I got to meet Lights after the show, I simply told her the truth:

“I love your music, it makes me happy when I am really sad.”

She beamed & gave me a really big hug. You know most rock stars…they are normal people like everyone else. Lights has over 11 Million profile views on MySpace for a reason, good stuff, positive, beautiful voice, emotive, original sound. My daughter Immi loves Lights like crazy & always wants us to play the album over & over again.

Todd’s top recommend tracks off of “The Listening” are:

  1. River
  2. Lions
  3. The Last Thing On Your Mind
  4. Face up

V For Vendetta, Phantom and 30 Seconds To Mars Video Mashup

This well done video mashup is the two movies V for Vendetta + Phantom of the Opera & the award winning 30 Seconds To Mars song “The Kill” all wrapped up into one. Good concept, good execution.

This is one of the best music & video mashups I have found floating around online in a long while. It is pretty stylized and the resulting video is different, somehow more then just the sum of the parts. It flows pretty consistently considering how different the source materials are, yet pulls from similar themes (darkness, the masks, duality, duplicity, etc). It is very original in both the content selection & the specific scene cuts which are used. Hats off to mergirl1 for this piece of creative mash.

Ellipse is Coming! Go Get it!

Imogen Heap has been busy for the past two years creating one of the most highly anticipated albums of the decade (Ellipse), she is pushing the boundaries of everything from the idea of what music is, multimedia and proving what social media can do by connecting artists directly with their fans. HAVE A LISTEN!

Imogen Heap Ellipse (Album Trailer)

If you have not heard Immi’s soundscapes & emotional states,  music before or heard the 1st single from Ellipse:

First Train Home (First Single)

Still not sure that Imogen Heap is quite pushing the boundaries, check the symbolism and metaphors in:

Canvas  (Video)

Artist struggling to survive should take Immi’s lead and create more experiences for their fans like this. They will not have problems selling models, if they innovate like this.  If you only buy one album this year, this should be it. The album will be dropping on August 25th 2009. Ellipse is coming…go get it while you still can.

Favorite Music Video From The YYYs – Maps

This is my favorite video & favorite song called “Maps” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

…it shows you what can be done with music videos, when approached with passionate creativity & excellent execution. The lead singer Karen O is a damn amazing performer, singer & song writer. The level of emotion she commits to her music & that she brings to her live performances is awe-inspiring. It is from the heart, the way music is supposed to be…if you could not tell the tears in this video are real. The way that they use lighting flare effects brings a uniqueness to this video which I had not seen done this well…ever. This video creates the song as a new visual emotional experience which is hypnotizing & reaches down in your soul at just grips you. It is undeniable.

When I was surfing around the net looking for and embeddable version of the original song I found this creative film project made from the “Maps” YYYs song that some UCSC film geeks made…

…shows you what a few individuals with just an idea & a vision can create from just about nothing (no budget). Apparently this was made by Farstorm Productions, an odd find from the corner of the web, they also have another creative music video done to a Silversun Pickups song.

Check Out DeadMau5

I am pretty particular of the electronic music that listen to and it takes a bit to impress me when it comes to DJs.  The other night I happened to be searching the MySpace music “other” category and found some really sick sounds from DeadMau5 (pronounced Dead Mouse) out of Toronto Canada.  I am impressed, check this music out.

New Mantra Courtesy of Dredg

As I have begun to go about changing many things in my life which I am not particularly thrilled with, I have found myself seeking new ways of being and one of my greatest resources for change is music.  There is a hook in the middle of this Dredg song called “Same ol’ Road” that I absolutely love which is akin to poetic philosophy:

“All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood
In a modest town where honest people dwell
Making the cleanest energy for the greenest plants to grow
Richest soil that is drenched with the freshest rain
Then you should sit in your backyard
Watch clouds peak over the tallest mountain tops
Cuz they unveil honest opinions about the stars”

I am using these lyrics as a kind of personal mantra to help de-clutter my life, my head and keep in focus the things I value in life.  Here is the video of the song which is itself a visual work of art:

If you have not heard music by Dredg, go check them out because their music is amazing and they are even better live.

Something Cool to Start off UR Saturday Morning

This is a cool 8 bit music video called “Starlight” by a Japanese 8 bit band called YMCK that you should check out.

I saw YMCK perform live with my friends Alexis and John at the Japan! Culture + Hyper Culture 2008 festival in Washington D.C. at the Kennedy Center.  It would be great to see them at a smaller venue where I could get up closer to the stage.

U2 Freedom Quote

“Freedom has a scent, like the top of a new born baby’s head.” – U2

Love the lyrics from some of U2′s songs, this one is from the song Miracle Drug. I know this one to be true because I have felt what it is to be completely free and from being a father.
